The Municipal Engineering discipline is a key program at the provincial level in Jiangsu, housed within the prestigious A+ national first-level discipline of Civil Engineering. It offers Master's, Doctoral, and Post-Doctoral programs. Committed to an educational philosophy of "Internationalization, Excellence, and Individualization," the program aims to cultivate future leaders in the field of Water Supply and Drainage Science and Engineering.
Our research focuses on three cutting-edge areas: Green Infrastructure and Sponge Cities, Drinking Water and Wastewater Quality Safety, and Environmental Functional Materials & Ecological Remediation. The discipline is deeply integrated into national initiatives such as the "Urban Lifeline" Engineering and the "Emerging Contaminants Control" action. Faculty members lead numerous major projects, including the National Key R&D Program and the National Natural Science Foundation of China. Our accomplishments have been recognized with prestigious awards, including the National First Prize for Scientific and Technological Progress and multiple provincial and ministerial first prizes, reflecting our strong academic influence and significant engineering application value.
The program boasts that 80% of its faculty have overseas study experience, and 100% of its undergraduate and graduate courses are offered in English. We have established a collaborative Joint Graduate Institute with Monash University in Suzhou and maintain deep partnerships with world-renowned universities such as KTH, CMU, and UIUC. Undergraduate students have opportunities to participate in 3+1+1 Dual Degree programs or engage in semester or year-long study abroad experiences.
With an annual intake of approximately 20 undergraduate and 30 graduate students, the program implements an integrated undergraduate and graduate education system. Specialized laboratories are open to undergraduates, encouraging independent and exploratory experimentation. Our students have achieved notable success, leading teams to win the National Gold Award in the "Internet+" Competition, the Grand Prize in the "Challenge Cup," and the runner-up title in the Global ASCE Water Treatment Competition. They have also published numerous papers in top-tier journals such as Water Research. Furthermore, the program has established close collaborations with government agencies and water utilities, providing students with diverse engineering practice opportunities through an "Industry-Education Integration" model.
Graduates of the program enjoy diverse and promising career paths. Over 70% pursue further education at top institutions worldwide. Among those entering the workforce, more than 90% secure positions in government management departments, water utilities, and urban construction groups, where they leverage their solid professional skills and international perspective to become core contributors and leaders in the industry.
